Orion Physical Therapy

What to Expect at Your First Physical Therapy Appointment

What happens at your first physical therapy appointment

Your first visit at Orion Physical Therapy in Springville is a full 60-minute, one-on-one evaluation with a licensed physical therapist — not a 10-minute intake followed by a hand-off to a tech. You’ll leave knowing exactly what’s causing your pain, what your plan looks like, and how long it should take.

Before you arrive

✓

No referral needed. Utah allows direct access to a physical therapist.
✓

Wear something you can move in. Shorts or leggings if your pain is in the hip, knee or ankle; a t-shirt if it’s your shoulder or neck.
✓

Bring any relevant health history. A list of current medications, past surgeries, or other conditions that could affect your treatment plan helps us build the most effective plan for you.
✓

Bring imaging reports (X-ray, MRI) if you have them, though they’re not required to get started.

What we actually do in the first hour

We listen first. What happened, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you’re trying to get back to — running, picking up your kids, your sport, your job.

We watch you move. Depending on where your pain is, that might mean walking, squatting, stepping down, reaching overhead or rotating your spine — we’re looking for the real cause, not just the sore spot.

We test strength, mobility and control around the area, and often above and below it too, since pain in one spot is frequently driven by a weakness or restriction somewhere else.

We give you a diagnosis and a plan before you leave — what’s likely driving the pain, roughly how many visits it should take, and what your first exercises are.

Often, we start treatment the same day — hands-on manual therapy, dry needling, or guided exercise, depending on what you need.

What it is not

It’s not a rushed intake form and a printout of generic exercises. It’s not being handed off to an aide while your PT sees three other patients at once. One patient, one physical therapist, the full hour.

After your evaluation

Most patients are seen 1–3 times per week to start, tapering as you improve. Every follow-up visit is also a full hour with your physical therapist — hands-on treatment, progressive strength work, and adjustments to the plan as you get better.
