Knee Pain

Getting back to full strength after knee pain

Knee pain has a way of shrinking your life. You stop running. You take the stairs one at a time. You skip the hike, the pickup game, the thing you actually enjoy — because you know what it will cost you the next day. Most people wait months hoping it settles down on its own. It rarely does, because the knee is usually not where the problem starts.

At Orion Physical Therapy we treat knee pain by looking at the whole chain — how your hip controls your leg, how your ankle absorbs load, how you actually move under fatigue. Fix those and the knee stops taking the beating.

What is causing your knee pain?

  • Hip and glute weakness. When the hip cannot control the thigh, the knee twists inward under load — the most common cause of pain we see in runners and lifters.
  • Overload, not damage. Too much too fast: miles, squats, a new job on your feet. The tissue is not injured, it is outpaced.
  • Arthritis and cartilage wear. Common after 45, and very treatable. Stronger legs mean less pain, whatever the imaging says.
  • Old injuries that never fully rehabbed. An ACL, meniscus or ankle sprain that healed but left you moving differently.
  • Kneecap tracking (patellofemoral pain). Pain on stairs, sitting for long stretches, or going downhill.

How we treat knee pain

A full 60-minute evaluation. We watch you walk, squat, step down and load the leg — not just poke at the knee. You will leave the first visit knowing what is driving your pain and how long it should take to change.

Hands-on treatment. Manual therapy, dry needling for stubborn quad and calf tightness, and myofascial decompression to get the joint moving and calm the pain down quickly.

Progressive strength work. This is what makes the relief stick. We load the knee, hip and calf on a plan that builds week to week, so the tissue gets genuinely more capable instead of just less irritated.

Back to what you do. Running, lifting, skiing, chasing kids — we test you against the real thing before we call it done.

When knee pain is not a PT problem

Straight talk: a knee that locks, gives way, or swelled up hard right after a twist needs imaging first. We will tell you that on the free phone consult rather than sell you visits you do not need, and we will help you get to the right person.
