Physical therapist or chiropractor for lower back pain?
For most mechanical lower back pain — pain from movement, sitting, lifting or a specific activity — a physical therapist is usually the better first stop, because PT addresses the strength, mobility and movement patterns behind the pain, not just the pain itself. Chiropractic care can bring fast relief for some people, but relief that doesn’t last is a sign the underlying weakness or movement problem was never addressed.

What each one actually does
Physical Therapy
Evaluates how you move — your hips, spine, core and legs working together — and builds a plan of hands-on treatment plus progressive exercise to fix what’s causing the pain and keep it from coming back.
Chiropractic Care
Centered on spinal manipulation and adjustment to restore joint motion and reduce pain, often used for quick symptom relief.
When PT is usually the better fit
When to see a chiropractor, or both
Some patients do well combining care — a chiropractor for joint mobility and quick relief, alongside PT to build the strength that keeps the relief from fading. If you’re already seeing a chiropractor and it’s not sticking, that’s usually the sign it’s time to add PT to the plan.
