Reaching, lifting and sleeping without shoulder pain
Shoulder pain is relentless because you cannot rest a shoulder. You use it to reach a seatbelt, wash your hair, put a bag in the overhead bin. And it is the joint that most reliably ruins sleep — most people who come to us have not slept on that side in months.
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which means it depends almost entirely on muscle control rather than bone structure to stay healthy. That is exactly why physical therapy works so well here, and why rest alone so often buys a few good weeks before the pain comes back.
What is causing your shoulder pain?
- Rotator cuff irritation or tearing. Pain reaching overhead or behind you, weakness lifting away from your body. Many tears respond well to rehab without surgery.
- Shoulder blade control. If the shoulder blade does not move properly on your ribcage, the cuff gets pinched every time you lift.
- Neck involvement. A surprising amount of “shoulder” pain comes from the neck. If your neck was never checked, your shoulder was never fully assessed.
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis). Progressive stiffness and deep ache, often with no injury. Treatable, but timing and the right amount of loading matter a lot.
- Overhead training and throwing volume. Press, pull-up, serve or pitch volume that outran what the shoulder was ready for.
- Post-surgical shoulders. Rotator cuff and labral repairs that need a careful, staged rebuild.
How we treat shoulder pain
A full 60-minute evaluation. We test the shoulder, the shoulder blade and the neck, and watch you reach, press and pull. You will know which one is actually driving the pain before you leave.
Hands-on treatment. Joint mobilization to restore motion, dry needling for the cuff, upper back and neck, plus IASTM and cupping where tissue is restricted — aimed at getting you sleeping again quickly.
Rebuild control and strength. Rotator cuff and shoulder blade strength, progressed into real overhead work. This is the part that keeps it from coming back, and the part most people skip.
Back to your sport or job. Overhead pressing, throwing, swimming, framing houses, lifting kids — we test the actual demand before we sign off.
When to get imaging first
Honest guidance: a shoulder that dislocated, cannot lift at all, or came with significant trauma should be imaged before rehab. We will say so on the free phone consult and point you in the right direction.
