Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Getting back to your sport, not just back to normal

A rolled ankle. A hamstring that keeps tightening up. A shoulder that only hurts when you throw. “Tennis elbow” that has hung around for months. Sports injuries are frustrating because rest alone rarely fixes what caused them — the movement pattern that led to the injury is usually still there when you go back to playing.

Orion Physical Therapy in Springville treats sports and athletic injuries for people throughout South Utah County — a full hour, one-on-one with a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer, built around getting you back to your sport stronger than before, not just pain-free.

Sports injuries we treat

  • Ankle sprains and instability. Cutting, landing and change-of-direction sports are the most common cause — and a sprain that isn’t fully rehabbed is the biggest predictor of the next one.
  • Hamstring and groin strains. Common in sprinting, soccer and field sports; healing the tissue is only half the job, rebuilding its capacity to fire under speed is the other half.
  • Runner’s knee and jumper’s knee (patellar tendinopathy). See also our knee pain page.
  • Shoulder impingement and rotator cuff irritation in throwers, swimmers and lifters. See also our shoulder pain page.
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow — tendon overload from racquet sports, lifting or repetitive gripping.
  • Shin splints and overuse injuries from running, soccer and other field sports, usually a training-load problem, not a “bad legs” problem.
  • Overuse injuries in runners and triathletes. IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy and stress reactions from training load that ramped up faster than your body could adapt.
  • Return to sport after surgery — ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair and similar. See our post-surgical rehab page.

How we treat sports injuries

A full 60-minute evaluation. We watch you move — run, jump, cut, throw — not just press on the sore spot, so you leave knowing exactly what’s driving the injury and roughly how long it should take to fix.

Hands-on treatment. Dry needling, IASTM and myofascial decompression (cupping) to calm irritated tissue and get motion back quickly.

Progressive strength and load. Rest doesn’t make tissue more capable — loading it correctly does. We build a plan that adds load week to week so you come back stronger, not just less sore.

Return-to-sport testing. Before we call it done, we test you against the real thing — cutting, sprinting, jumping or throwing — the same standard we use with post-surgical athletes.

A bridge to performance. Once you’re pain-free, many athletes continue with our personal training programs, including sport-specific and jump/vertical training, so the injury has less chance of coming back.

Training for a marathon, half, or triathlon?

Runners and triathletes usually get hurt from a training load problem, not a “bad body” problem — mileage, intensity or a new bike fit that increased faster than your tissue could keep up. We build your rehab around your race calendar: what you can keep doing while you heal, how to adjust volume without losing fitness, and a strength plan that addresses the specific breakdowns endurance athletes see — hip and glute weakness, ankle and foot overload, and shoulder fatigue in swimmers. The goal is getting you to the start line, not just pain-free on the couch.

When it’s not a PT problem

Straight talk: a joint that’s grossly unstable, a suspected fracture, or a hard hit followed by major swelling needs imaging first. We’ll tell you that on the free phone consult rather than sell you visits you don’t need, and help you get to the right person.

Why Orion Physical Therapy

  • A full hour, every visit. One patient, one physical therapist — not handed off between three people and a heat pack.
  • Athletes treating athletes. Orion Wilson is a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer who works with athletes under real load every day — we won’t tell you to just stop playing your sport.
  • We treat the cause. The movement pattern behind the injury, not just the sore spot.
  • Local and direct. Our Springville clinic serves Mapleton, Spanish Fork, Salem, Payson and Provo. Utah does not require a doctor’s referral — you can start with us.
