Dry-Needling
Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists to treat muscle pain and dysfunction. In dry needling, thin, filiform needles are inserted into specific points in muscles or other soft tissues to relieve pain, reduce muscle tension, and improve range of motion. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is rooted in Western medicine principles and focuses on areas of muscle tightness, known as “trigger points.“
Here’s a bit more about how it works and what it’s used for:
- Trigger Points: Trigger points are areas of knotted or tight muscle tissue that can cause pain locally or refer pain to other parts of the body. Dry needling targets these points, helping muscles relax and function more effectively.
- Pain Relief and Tension Reduction: By inserting the needle, a physical therapist can release tight bands of muscle, reduce inflammation, and stimulate a natural pain relief response in the body.
- Enhanced Movement: Many patients experience an improved range of motion and reduced pain, allowing them to engage more freely in everyday activities and physical therapy exercises.
Dry needling is often used for conditions like back pain, neck pain, sciatica, joint pain, headaches, and other musculoskeletal issues. It’s most effective when combined with other treatments like stretching, strengthening exercises, and manual therapy.
